Speakerboxxx for Individual Mix Forum

Here's a place where you can drop a comment ABOUT the comments being made for each mix.

For example: I love how T-Real doesn't even care. Sure he could disguise his identity by coming up with an Office-related Alias... but NO, he's hardcore. He'll tell you straight to your face if he thinks your mix blows. And I respect the hell out of that.

New Topic: Are there any songs/artists that you have discovered in the music game that have either led you to purchase/acquire the album or to another artist?

Rosie Thomas concert

Last night my friend Carolyn and I went to see her at a small venue in Hollywood called Hotel Cafe. If you can magage to get a seat, this is a great venue. Rosie was terrific. And here's why... She totally compensates for the fact that all of her songs are slow and either sound depressing or actually are. She often made comments like "Ok, now we're going to take it down a notch" or "Here's one that'll get you up on your feet" Loved the sarcasm. She's hysterical in her mannerisms. (though I could picture Sinclair there and thinking that she was "unnecessary"). Her talking voice sounds like a 12 year old gymnast on speed. Listen to the song "Farewell"...she talks at the end of it, and until last night I thought it was a little kid speaking at the end. Nope. It was her. However, I think this voice only adds to her singing voice... I was continually amazed at her sound. Also to be noted... before the lead in singer played... Rosie did a short stand-up comedic monologue. She was dressed as a nerd, with retainers, pigtails, and suspenders. Carolyn and I kept thinking she was "almost" funny, but it wound up being more strange than anything else. I've never seen that done before. I would have died to see some of your reactions. It had "bordering on retardation" written all over it.

For those of you who couldn't make it

This past weekend Meghan and I, along with two of our friends, went and saw Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk play in LA. It was a really low-key concert and really great! Schuyler was especially great. I had heard her sing with Joshua Radin before, but not by herself. She is adorable and has a great voice! Also, for some fun trivia...her mom is actress Sissy Spacek and she sang back up for her (in jeans and a pea coat, I might add). Joshua and Schuyler were both so great live - and I bought her EP which is really good. You can check out her music on myspace but its not on iTunes...so let me know if you want a copy! Anyways, just wanted to post and let yall know that the concert was a lot of fun...and on top of all that, Zach Braff (who is good friends with Joshua Radin) was at the concert, along with his friend Donald Faison - the guy in Scrubs/Clueless. We thought we spotted him up in the balconey and then someone called his name and he turned around and did a little entertaining for the crowd...needless to say we felt pretty cool to be attending concerts with celebrities. Obviously Zach has good taste. :)

Week 3: April 22-28

Traditionally one of my favorite parts of these music games. It's usually at about this point when I've started growing a little tired of the mixes that i initially favored, and i find myself branching out and giving other mixes more of a chance. This is when those mixes that feature a lot of bands that i'm not so familiar with get a lot of airtime.

I can't think of any good questions/topics to throw out at the moment, so feel to come up with your own and ask something that'll get people talking.

ACL Most Wanted List

At least 6 of us (actually 7 if we include Katie) bought tickets yesterday for the Austin City Limits Music Festival in September. The lineup hasn't been released yet, but I thought it might be fun to talk about who we'd LOVE to see there. I read somewhere that the ACL headliners are supposedly gonna be MUCH bigger than the Coachella headliners (Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against The Machine).

If you aren't one of the 7 that bought tickets yesterday, then get your act together and go here... it's gonna be a blast.

Week 2: April 15-21

I am tired of scrolling down through week 1..... I am also hoping that Philip shows up for week 2!

Looking forward to more cutting and clever comments! Happy Listening!

Must Have Album of the Moment

yeah yeah yeah... i know we're all in full swing "mix mode" right now, but in an attempt to keep things fresh and to offer something new to talk about if you're tired of the whole "i hate the boston song" thread, here's a new topic:

In the past month, what album(s) have you come across that's been so good that it's been almost impossible not to share it with all of your friends? What's the album that you definitely would've told everyone about if you weren't trying to create a mix full of music that no one's ever heard before?

discuss...

Austin City Limits

Tickets go on sale in one week! I know a lot of us are planning to go...great city, great friends and GREAT music!! I personally can't wait. Just wanted to remind everyone that tickets go on sale next Tuesday, April 17th...so get 'em while they're hot! www.aclfestival.com

I would venture to say that most of the bands in this game of ours will be there as well - although the line-up has not been released yet. So...who's in?

Week 1 Forum: 4/9-4/15

Just taking a stab here... trying to figure out what kinda stuff works and what doesn't. I thought I'd create this forum as a place where we can come to share our initial thoughts, reactions, and comments SPECIFICALLY ABOUT MUSIC for the first week of the game. Obviously feel free to create your own posts about other topics you find "post-worthy," but I thought this might be a good way to attempt organizing our music conversations and observations. Who knows if this'll work... Friday might roll around without 1 single comment... but I guess there's only one way to find out.

And as always... feel free to use anonymity/some clever Office reference if you feel like saying something along the lines of "Mix #10 is easily the worst mix we've ever been forced to listen to... it's creator must be bordering on retardation."

Friday Reminder

Hey guys... just wanted to remind y'all to anonymously post your track list on the "Track Lists" post. Happy Listening... I don't know about you guys, but California got our mixes in the mail today.

A Paradox and The New Normal

Completely fired up to search (via the all-mighty Yahoo Music aka "Whole Song"), I began compiling the best mix of all time. But I noticed a paradox. Listening to the same songs over and over to make sure they are mix-worthy made me sick of the songs. You could argue that one cannot get sick of a good mix. I did not find this to be true. Its a perfectly good mix. So while my friends will truely experience musical perfection, I like any attractive DJ, will be kinda "over it." Like it was so March07. But, although anti-climactic, I will accept my award with grace and appreciation....smiling, but kinda forcing it, you know?

So, who judges the best mix of all time? Music folk and those aspiring to be just that. I, for one, am only aspiring. Although, I have my concerns about the music culture. They tend to wish it was still 1976 and prefer concrete surroundings and neglected parts of town. Although they are generally accepting of people and current with the trends, they don't typically close their mouth all the way and "can" fashion their hair rather asymmetrically to their body's shape. True music folk seem to carry on conversation easily amidst a thundering electric guitar solo which fascinates me. And they don't fake the headnods. They are genuine in their headnodding because, of course, they are good listeners. So its an interesting dichotomy...like they are "all ear and no eye." Surely, nobody would choose neglected parts of an inner city to...well...do anything assuming you can see. But you don't have to see to be a good person. You know, I think music people are so in tune with their audio-sensitive heart, that they get lost when about town...and then people take pictures of them...and once again being so disconnected from the eye, they choose one of the random street-scene pictures for their album cover.

Now, they tend to be like artists....finding their identity in being "different" (heaven forbid a song on the radio is actually good) and think that God "also" drew outside the lines. Like abstract is right. (exhale) Lets do a test. Look at your arm. Do you see shards of flesh skewed everywhere? No. You don't see anything like that. There is a very defined line where there is arm and where there is no longer arm. Sure, life is complex and art should reflect that. But abstract art is not complex..its just inaccurate. Its the artist's version of the "new normal." But that is part of being artsy...its living so far outside the box that reality becomes stupid and unmanagable. Its a copout. A "throwing in the towel." Music people are artsy and embrace this New Normal. A good example is excessive minutes of random percussion noise at the end of perfectly good Wilco songs. From perfectly created sound ending in nonsense camoflauged as The New Normal. And yes, putting something abstract on their album cover.

So am I willing to accept a New Normal? I think first we should have to look at what the original Normal is. And what is wrong with it. Does there need to be a New Normal?

Bradley, surely you can help create some dialogue on this.

Michael, thoughts on the New Normal? Granted, its a vague term, so I grant you full liberty to interpret as you will.

No, I'm not smoking anything. But I do think about it. And yes, to answer your question, I do fake like I'm smoking with what seems to be perfectly mimicked hand-mouth motions. I think I would be a good smoker. People would notice. They would say, "Now Jimmy, HE is a good smoker." I would just kinda chuckle. And then keep smoking.

Apropos

I saw this on Pop Candy this morning and thought it was appropriate in light of what we're doing here. I was trying to think of what our equivalent might be...

Like the loser having to put Shaggy's "Angel" as their myspace song for a month... or I guess "Insomnia" by Electric President if you ask Meghan.
