Week 1 Forum: 4/9-4/15

Just taking a stab here... trying to figure out what kinda stuff works and what doesn't. I thought I'd create this forum as a place where we can come to share our initial thoughts, reactions, and comments SPECIFICALLY ABOUT MUSIC for the first week of the game. Obviously feel free to create your own posts about other topics you find "post-worthy," but I thought this might be a good way to attempt organizing our music conversations and observations. Who knows if this'll work... Friday might roll around without 1 single comment... but I guess there's only one way to find out.

And as always... feel free to use anonymity/some clever Office reference if you feel like saying something along the lines of "Mix #10 is easily the worst mix we've ever been forced to listen to... it's creator must be bordering on retardation."

Interesting similarities between number 5 and number 8 using the Fratellis, the same Modest Mouse song and the same exact last song. I am curious how you two feel about each other's mix?

we actually collaborated on our mixes. is that a problem? it wasn't against the rules was it?

Anonymous said...

I didn’t see anything in the "official rules" email against collaborations...

can i just say that i'm REALLY looking forward to the day when someone makes a post saying something like, "mix A was definitely made by person X," followed by person X saying, "are you kidding me, mix A was terrible. i can't believe someone thought that was mine." followed by the actual creator being heartbroken because his/her mix was not only incorrectly pegged, but the accused quickly responded by denying it and calling it complete crap.

ahhhh... anyone with me here? no?

... crickets?

oh well... a boy can dream. (OR GIRL!! i'm so anonymous)

anyways... i was driving to Laguna Beach with my sister this morning and just as we came over this ridge and were exposed to all of these beautiful McMansions and the coast, "The Bronze Beached Boys" from mix 4 was blasting and I HONESTLY felt like I was catching that first establishing shot from The OC... only we were coming from the north as opposed to a helicopter from the ocean.

My point is... i really like "My Bronze Beached Boys," and it's currently "up there" on my list of favorites.

so much for anonymity...

anyone else have front runners for favorite/least favorite songs or mixes?

To start, I would like to hear explanations for the inclusion of the following songs:
-Steal my Kisses
-I'm Shipping to Boston
more to come but those are a start

I, too, love the Bronze Beached Boys.
great song!

agree with michael's george foreman grill....

can not figure out why "i'm shipping to boston" was included on an otherwise terrific mix #5.

there is no place for "steel my kisses" in this music game.

please explain

maybe the person who put "i'm shipping up to boston" on their mix was trying to feed off the energy of the rest of their mix and keep things upbeat and exciting. maybe that person genuinely likes the song (when in the mood for something fun and upbeat) and also enjoys how it reminds its audience of The Departed. or... maybe the person was going for something a little out-of-the-box in hopes of broadening horizons.

Speaking of broadening horizons... how about Mix #6... which:

a) introduced me to the first Cake song I've ever heard that didn't make me wanna throw up everywhere.

and b) showed us "Dirty Town," which might be the single most annoying song I've listened to since "Mmmbop."

Anonymous said...

i find all the west coast references to be annoyoing and in violation of the anonymity clause... with the exception of "dirty town." yes, i agree that this is an odd and bordering on annoying song, however i feel that some people should probably take note and "get gone from a dirty town"

Anonymous said...

Really? Fun and upbeat? I think I would probably go with miserable, harsh and unpleasant...

Anonymous said...

Dizzaaamn!! I think andy bernard might have been hittin' the Hatorade pretty hard before that post.

I hope whoever used "i'm shipping to boston" isn't cowering in a corner somewhere crying his eyes out.

"miserable," "harsh," "unpleasant." that's the type of stuff that'll crush a man's spirit.

But I guess that's the risk you run when playing the music game v3.0. If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen!!

The gloves are officially off...

andy bernard, st. bernard.... i think that if you try and listen to "i'm shipping to boston" without the lyrics you would find it to be a light hearted upbeat irish melody that would hours make you want to perform multiple jigs. unfortunately we got the lyrics.....

Anonymous said...

haha st. patrick...I am SO with you on that! I tried it out again, thinking maybe I was too harsh...and I thought to myself "hmmm its not SO bad - kinda festive actually" and then BAM it hit me with those abrasive lyrics and I had to quickly switch to another song.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Steal My Kisses...although my very first thought was "OH, I know this song!" ....but then I was over it in 4 to 5 seconds.

However, I'm going against the grain and say I really like the Boat me to Boston song! The beat is infectious!

(does anyone else feel unsafe without spell check?)

I’m haven’t fully decided if I like “Boston” or not yet, but I will say that every time I hear the first 40 seconds with that upbeat Irish melody I can’t help but think of Michael Flatly, Lord of the Dance...does that happen to anyone else?

Anonymous said...

apparently i am in need of the grammar check feature....for word order. and yes it does make me think of michael flatly, lord of the dance!

Anonymous said...

wtf?!? are you serious?!? are you EFFING serious?

i cannot believe you people think of michael flatly when you hear "i'm shipping up the boston." if there was EVER a song that brought to mind blood and killing and guns and extreme violence... it would be THIS song! and i am personally offended and enraged that not one, but TWO of you would mention some fairy who prances around in a onesie while thinking about the most testosterone-filled song in this game.

i don't care if you don't like the song. i don't care if you don't like the guy's voice or the words that he's "singing"... but for the LOVE, don't compare it to some limp-wristed ballet dancer. it's insulting and it pisses me off.

i'm not even kidding or trying to be funny at this point... i'm just irate at the stupidity coming out of your mouths. i hope you're all ashamed of yourselves.

just for the record my agreement on shipping to boston and lord of the dance refers solely to the song pre-lyrics. i am sure that packer's ladies are right in that they are completely opposite, however I have blocked all lyrics out of my head. I sincerely hope that the conveyed rage does not ruin these delightful whores day.

The provider of Bronze Boys would just like to say Thank You. He/She is excited that some of you like it enough to comment.

And although his/her mix doesn't have Young Folks on it, like all the rest, he/she hopes you enjoy mix4.

Anonymous said...

whoa packer's girls...I was just being honest in what the first 40 seconds remind me of. Is honesty allowed here? But, I totally agree that after the first 40 seconds I start thinking about blood and killing and guns and extreme violence. I am done commenting on that subject now.

Anonymous said...

hey pretzel man... honesty is not only allowed, it's encouraged (especially when it isn't so polite). and i hope the same goes for opinionated responses. i will continue to welcome your critique and hopefully you'll enjoy my rebuttals as well (no matter how impassioned they may become from time to time).

speaking of... i can't decide if this goes in the "Superlative" section or the Weekly Forum... but who's with me in handing out the award for the mix with the "Most tracks by a side project/previous group from what made that person famous" to MIX #2?!? i'm sure there are probably more that i don't recognize, but here's what i've caught so far:

- Memphis: side project for guys from Stars and Metric
- Tarkio: previous band of Colin Meloy of The Decemberists
- Portastic: side project for Super Chunk's Mac McCaughan
- The New Pornographers: basically a huge hodgepodge of famous Canadian musicians from all sorts of bands

you were one Postal Service song away from hitting for the cycle!

along the same lines, I think mix number 8 should win the "most songs featured on other mixes" superlative. I have found four so far...

Anonymous said...

Does Mix 5 know who Mix 6 is? And vice versa? And maybe you should raise children together or something.

Anonymous said...

Toby's an idiot. He meant to say does Mix 5 know who Mix 8 is.

Anonymous said...

hey toby and your ex-wife... what exactly did you think i meant when i said, "we collaborated on our mixes?"

i was just trying to keep it PG since this is a public site.

Good call though... babies are currently on the way.

Anonymous said...

Jim's Ex...you're making love/children with mix 5 or 8??

THIS is amazing!! See what the music game can do??

I got dibs on mix3.
